Bucknell Commute
To and from Bucknell ManorAlthough it's nearly possible to boat to and from Bucknell, the most common modes of commuting to and from Bucknell are:
Public TransportationHuntington Metro Station. "Huntington", the southern end of the Yellow Line, is a long walk or a short bike ride from Bucknell. The bus stops at the front door most Bucknell Condo's and some Bucknell residences. The bus shuttles residents a mile or so to the Metro.
The south mezzanine of Huntington station is built into a hillside creating a unique panoramic view of Alexandria. Because of the hill, the station is elevated high above Huntington Avenue, but located below grade at North Kings Highway. The staion is accessible via escalator access and via an interesting funicular elevator. Bucknell Manor itself is served by the Fairfax Connector bus system and the Huntington Metro Station is also a stop on a few Metrobus routes, including the 9A which travels to the Pentagon, and the "REX" bus, an express route that connects the Kings Street Metro Station and Fort Belvoir via Richmond Highway (U.S. Route 1). The standard fare for Metrobuses is $1.25. Presenting a rail-to-bus transfer slip that can be obtained from dispensers at the beginning of a trip in the Metrorail system results in a discounted fare of $0.35. See WMATA.com for bus timetables and system maps. Fairfax Connector buses 151, 152, 161, and 162 travel along North Kings Highway with a terminus at the south entrance of the Huntington Metro Station. These bus routes extend along South Kings Highway and Richmond Highway into the southern-most sections of Fairfax County. Fairfax Connector buses leaving the north entrance of the Huntington Metro station proceed along routes that reach the Springfield and Kingstowne areas to the west and the Fort Hunt and Mount Vernon areas to the east and south. Schedules and maps for these routes and other Fairfax Connector buses can be found in the Fairfax Connector section of the Fairfax County web site. The standard fare for Fairfax Connector buses is $1.00, with a discounted fare of $0.35 with a rail-to-bus transfer. Metrobus, Fairfax Connector, and DASH (City of Alexandria) bus systems give paper transfers upon request to riders that allow a rider to transfer to another bus route or systems free of additional charge within a set period of time (normally around 2 hours for Metrobus-issued transfers and around 4 hours for the suburban systems). Both Fairfax Connector and DASH plan to install "SmartTrip" card systems by the end of 2006 that should allow for discounted rail-to-bus and bus-to-bus transfers without paper transfer slips.
Unlike many metro stations in Northern Virginia, Huntington has over 4,400 parking spaces accessible from both entrances. Because the parking is ample, many Bucknell residents drive to Huntington and park in commuter garages. The bike trails are a wonderful way to work or play .
Biking
Serious bikers often ride on George Washington Parkway but recreational bikers prefer the easy bends of the local bike trails. Some residents actually use these trails to bike work or to the Metro.

There isn't a more pleasant drive in Northern Virginia
than the George Washington Parkway.
Area Roads
Bucknell is served by a well developed road system near US Rt. 1, I-495, the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, and the George Washington Parkway. Because most of the homes around the area were built more than 40 years ago and because there is minimal opportunity or cause for cut-through traffic, the surrounding area is relatively free from the congestion that is commonplace in the Washington Metro Region.
